A group of volunteers visited the National Army Museum stores for a tour of the archives and an opportunity to handle objects, from 9-pound rifles to intimate photographs of South Asian troops in the trenches at Gallipoli.

Here’s a list of the objects we looked at, including beautiful sketches of South Asian soldiers on the Western Front by Paul Sarrut. Have a look at the catalogue for more examples of the kind of things that NAM holds. They’ve also got sound recordings, uniforms, statuettes, weapons, and other astonishing paraphenalia.

If you’re inspired and want to look at these objects more closely, here are some instructions for accessing NAM archives, which are currently in Stevenage due to the museum refurbishment currently ongoing in Chelsea. I’ll certainly be going back.
